Description: The Major Attractors layer is part of the Regional Activities Centers Inventory. Major Attractors include Sea World, the Zoo, Seaport Village, Legoland, Lindbergh Field and major hotels. Major hotels contain at least 200 rooms and have 100 or more employees. Regional Activity Centers are locations in the San Diego region that attract large numbers of people on a regular basis. Other layers in the Activity Centers Inventory are Major Private Employers, Government Centers, Hospitals, Public Schools, and Colleges and Universities. SANDAG consolidated information into the first regional Activity Centers Inventory in 1988. Publications and computer data files from various agencies were used as initial sources for the verification and existence of sites. The San Diego Chamber of Commerce 'Business Referral Directory', and CALTRANS' Commuter Computer file provided information on major private employers and government centers. Other sources included the San Diego Convention & Visitors Bureau, the Hospital Council of San Diego and Imperial Counties, the Naval Facilities Engineering Command, and the telephone book. Once identified, telephone inquiries were used to collect data and field checks were done to confirm their accuracy. In addition to existing sites the database was expanded to include under construction and proposed sites. A unique identification number was assigned to each record in order to track sites. After assembling the information into a computer readable file the records were geocoded using the ArcInfo ADDRESSMATCH program. ADDRESSMATCH assigns X-Y coordinates to each record allowing the data to be mapped and used for other GIS applications. The file is updated annually using many of the sources listed above and by monitoring newspaper and magazine articles. This data is derived from an ArcInfo Coverage downloaded from the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) Web site. The SANDAG Web site offers a comprehensive online library of databases, mapping applications, publications, and other resources about the San Diego region. SANDAG stores and maintains a large number of Geographic Information System (GIS) data layers for use in it's regional planning efforts. All of SANDAG's GIS data bases are in ArcInfo and use the California State Plane Coordinate System (feet), Zone VI, North American Datum 83 (NAD 83) with single precision coordinate representation. Unless otherwise noted in the metadata, all information contained in the GIS data sets are generated at scales of 1:24,000 (1" = 2000') and have categorical and positional accuracies associated with the scale.
